Canola area more than doubles in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul as harvest opens

Rio Grande do Sul held the first national opening of the canola harvest in Ijuí on October 13, with the oilseed's area in the state estimated at 353397 hectares in 2026 — up 102.64% from 174394 hectares in 2025, according to Emater/RS-Ascar. Projected production is about 572000 tonnes at an average yield of 1619 kg per hectare, and the state accounts for more than 90% of Brazil's canola output. Driven by industry demand for biodiesel feedstock, 3tentos — one of the organizers — has invested R$60 million in its Ijuí plant to produce biodiesel from canola and is encouraging more than 100000 hectares of planting this year.

Cepea: Soybean sack down 3.3% in Paranaguá last week as stronger real cheapens domestic soy

Brazil's soybean prices fell last week as the real's appreciation against the dollar cheapened soy on the domestic market, according to a survey by the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea). The 60-kg soybean sack averaged R$ 148.24 in the Paraná market last week, 3.8% lower than the week before; at the port of Paranaguá, the decline was milder at 3.3%, with the sack quoted at R$ 155.46. The commercial dollar fell 4.5% over the same period, based on the Central Bank rate, and the slide deepened after the first round of Brazil's presidential elections. Cepea noted that export volumes have been helping to support prices.

European Commission updates EUDR Information System User Guide (v3.0)

The European Commission has published version 3.0 of the EUDR Information System User Guide for Economic Operators (updated 16 September 2026), with step-by-step guidance on account registration, EU Login, user roles, and creating/managing Due Diligence Statements and Simplified Declarations, plus dashboard use and grouping functions. It also clarifies roles and responsibilities, including re-import procedures: where a qualifying re-importer has not received the original reference number from its supplier, a conventional reference number may be used in the customs declaration (prescribed format 22EU2222222222). The Commission will run virtual training sessions in October 2026: Due Diligence Statements for upstream operators on 13 and 22 October, and Simplified Declarations for micro/small primary operators on 15 and 27 October (Malaysia time, GMT+8). For Malaysian palm oil exporters, EU operators may increasingly request origin, geolocation, traceability and legality data to support their own compliance obligations.

GAPKI: Indonesian palm companies ready for EUDR, but smallholder land legality is the hurdle

At the IPOC 2026 press conference in Jakarta on October 9, GAPKI chairman Eddy Martono said Indonesian palm companies are practically ready for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), with geolocation and licensing in place. The biggest challenge sits with smallholders, who still face land legality problems. EUDR requires sharing geolocation data of plantations, while Indonesian regulations bar such data from being disclosed publicly. Eddy, just back from Amsterdam meetings with the Indonesian embassy and EU importers, said European buyers also worry about EUDR implementation and want a win-win solution, since they depend on Indonesian palm oil. Indonesia has proposed a memorandum of understanding with the EU, and the IEU-CEPA trade deal — planned for 2027 — would grant zero-tariff access for 1 million tonnes of palm oil to the EU. GAPKI secretary general Hadi Sugeng warned that 2027 exports may fall to only 26.5 million tonnes (output of 56.6Mt under El Niño vs ~60Mt potential, with full-year B50 absorbing ~17.4Mt and domestic use at ~30Mt), risking Indonesia's trade balance.

GAPKI: 2027 palm oil prices may rise as domestic biodiesel use erodes exports

Indonesian palm oil association GAPKI expects palm oil prices to rise in 2027 as strong domestic biodiesel absorption cuts Indonesian exports. Secretary-General Hadi Sugeng Wahyudiono said the shift would tighten the global vegetable-oil balance and could push up cooking-oil and derivative prices at home. GAPKI remains optimistic that 2026 output can reach 58.8 million tons; full 2027 price projections will be presented by global analysts, including Dorab Mistry, at IPOC 2026 in Bali on November 11-13.

How engineered refuse-derived fuel is moving heavy industry away from fossil fuels

ANDRITZ's Dominique Kuehner describes how engineered refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is shifting from a waste liability to an energy asset for heavy industry. The piece points to the EU's incoming landfill ban as an accelerant, arguing that engineered RDF lets cement, steel and other heavy plants displace fossil fuels without replacing core process equipment.
