ASA: biofuel demand offsets weaker soybean export demand only in 2026/27 projection

American Soybean Association economists modeled U.S. soybean prices against marketing year 2023/24 demand levels. Weaker export demand cut soybean prices by an estimated net $0.87 per bushel in MY 24/25 and $1.38-$1.81 in MY 25/26, while growing domestic biofuel demand added $0.22 in MY 25/26 and a projected $0.42 in MY 26/27. Only in the projected MY 26/27 case - conditional on October 2026 USDA WASDE estimates, including resumed Chinese purchases - does the combination turn net positive, by an estimated $0.18 per bushel. Soybean oil use for biofuel rose from nearly 8.9 billion pounds in 2020 to about 14 billion pounds in 2025. The analysis attributes part of the export decline to rising Brazilian production and China trade disruption; China is on track to buy just over 12 MMT in MY 26/27 versus 22 MMT or more historically.

MPA, CMA CGM and SLNG sign MOU to advance liquefied bio-methane as marine fuel pathway

Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), CMA CGM Group and Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG) have signed an MOU to explore the supply and use of liquefied bio-methane as a marine fuel in Singapore. The partners will exchange knowledge on certification, supply pathways and greenhouse gas accounting for bio-methane blended into shared gas infrastructure, and run pilots and trials under real operating conditions. SLNG notes it is one of the first LNG terminals in the region certified under ISCC EU to handle liquefied bio-methane.

How engineered refuse-derived fuel is moving heavy industry away from fossil fuels

ANDRITZ's Dominique Kuehner describes how engineered refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is shifting from a waste liability to an energy asset for heavy industry. The piece points to the EU's incoming landfill ban as an accelerant, arguing that engineered RDF lets cement, steel and other heavy plants displace fossil fuels without replacing core process equipment.

Antarctic fungi show potential for biofuels and industrial enzymes

Scientists in Brazil identified 47 cultivable fungal isolates from Antarctica’s Deception Island that produce cold-active enzymes useful in food, detergent, and textile industries. Two Solicoccozyma terricola isolates produced intracellular lipids on glucose, suggesting potential as a microbial-biofuel feedstock with yields approaching palm oil.

Mainz team turns biodiesel by-product glycerin into formic acid and hydrogen via hybrid electrolysis

Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have developed a new "hybrid electrolysis" process that converts glycerin — generated in large volumes as a by-product of biodiesel production — into two valuable raw materials: formic acid and hydrogen, with results published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials. Unlike conventional water electrolysis, the process uses glycerin as a feedstock alongside water, so that instead of oxygen the anode product is formic acid, a versatile chemical industry feedstock that today is mostly produced from fossil sources. The process also yields hydrogen, which can serve as an energy carrier. Study leader Prof. Dr. Carsten Streb (JGU Department of Chemistry) said the approach can make an important contribution to electrifying the chemical industry, a transformation companies are currently pursuing at scale to cut CO2 emissions.

GAPKI: CPO production sufficient for B50, but productivity key to exports

GAPKI states Indonesia's CPO production is sufficient for the B50 mandate, though full implementation in 2027 is projected to significantly reduce exports, especially with El Niño impacts. The association emphasizes that increasing productivity through replanting, rather than land expansion, is essential for sustainability.
