Hormuz shock briefly made biofuel the cheapest bunker option, white paper finds

A General Index and LSEG white paper finds B30 (30% UCOME biodiesel, 70% VLSFO) became USD 74.61 per tonne cheaper than conventional VLSFO in Rotterdam in April once EU ETS and potential FuelEU Maritime costs are included, after costing USD 11-27 more in the prior three months. B100 UCOME traded at a discount to marine gasoil for eight weeks between March and May; the authors caution this was temporary, not a permanent shift. SAF prices rose USD 636 per tonne between February and March, and aviation would need carbon prices near USD 445 per tonne of CO2e to close the SAF-jet fuel gap.

Mazda's microalgae biodiesel R&D project selected for NEDO's FY2026 program

Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that its R&D project "Development of High-Density Microalgal Biofuel" was selected for the fiscal 2026 program of NEDO, the Japanese government agency that funds the commercialization of energy-saving decarbonization technologies. The project targets renewable HVO biodiesel refined from microalgal lipids. Mazda, which has researched algae biofuels since the 2010s together with Hiroshima University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, will lead the upstream chain — high-density cultivation, harvesting, drying and lipid extraction — while Idemitsu Kosan will study refining the extracted lipids into usable fuel. Mazda says it has validated production of more than one liter of fuel in about two weeks from a 1000-liter cultivation tank. As a first industrial application, the company aims to factory-fill every diesel vehicle built at its Japanese plants with algae-derived HVO biodiesel in the early 2030s. Director and CSO Takeji Kojima framed the effort within Mazda's multi-solution strategy toward a regional circular energy model.

Japan's next-gen fuel journal: SAF to reshape aviation — decarbonization and the race for domestic production

A feature from the Japanese monthly 'Jigyō Kōsō' online (reprinted with permission from the METI Kinki Bureau's official Note, originally published September 3, 2026) opens the 'Next-Generation Fuel Journal' series on sustainable aviation fuel. It explains that SAF — made from used cooking oil, woody biomass and bioethanol — is a drop-in fuel usable in existing aircraft and fueling infrastructure, cutting lifecycle emissions by roughly 60–80% versus conventional jet fuel; ICAO expects SAF to deliver about 55% of aviation decarbonization by 2050. Japan's policy stack includes the 2030 target of replacing 10% of domestic airlines' fuel with SAF, a public-private SAF council, Green Innovation Fund support for technology development, GX transition bond backing for large manufacturing equipment investment, a tax scheme to promote domestic production in strategic sectors, and feedstock supply-chain support. The three main barriers: high production costs, tight waste-cooking-oil supply amid international competition driving up prices, and securing demand while scaling volumes (2022 global SAF supply was about 300000 kilolitres, just 0.1% of global jet fuel). Domestic projects are advancing in Wakayama, Osaka, Chiba and Okinawa; Cosmo Oil's Sakai refinery began supplying domestically produced SAF in April 2025; the Kinki Bureau has hosted the 'Kansai Next-Generation Fuel Forum NEXT' since 2023, most recently on March 10, 2026.

Brazil biodiesel margins narrow again in week 40 as plant costs outpace price hikes

In the 40th week of 2026 (40S), Brazilian plants sold biodiesel at an average of R$5,622.84 per cubic metre, up 2% from the previous week, rebounding after the sector broke a rising streak, according to ANP data cited by BiodieselBR. The price is up 14.8% over 17 weeks of near-uninterrupted gains since mid-June, moving back toward early-year levels — but still about R$300 (5.3%) short of the near-R$6 per litre levels seen at the turn of 2025-2026. BiodieselBR notes that rising plant costs outpaced the price increases applied over the past week, squeezing margins again.

India's SAF sector could become a new market for US corn

The US grain industry sees India's sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector as a potential new market for American corn, according to UkrAgroConsult. The concept involves using corn-based ethanol in alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) technology to produce aviation fuel. The US industry is also promoting imported corn for ethanol aimed at higher road-fuel blending levels such as E85, while India's existing E20 program would continue to rely mainly on domestic feedstocks. US representatives expect India's future ethanol demand could eventually exceed its domestic feedstock capacity, and see India's existing ethanol distillery network as a foundation for SAF production — though technology investment, certification and long-term offtake agreements would be needed. Access for US corn to the Indian market remains sensitive due to protections for domestic farmers and restrictions on GM products, so the US industry is pushing to focus the discussion on ethanol's lifecycle carbon footprint rather than feedstock origin alone. Hindustan Times separately reported that US companies are also exploring investments in SAF facilities in India using ATJ technology.

GAPKI: Indonesian palm companies ready for EUDR, but smallholder land legality is the hurdle

At the IPOC 2026 press conference in Jakarta on October 9, GAPKI chairman Eddy Martono said Indonesian palm companies are practically ready for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), with geolocation and licensing in place. The biggest challenge sits with smallholders, who still face land legality problems. EUDR requires sharing geolocation data of plantations, while Indonesian regulations bar such data from being disclosed publicly. Eddy, just back from Amsterdam meetings with the Indonesian embassy and EU importers, said European buyers also worry about EUDR implementation and want a win-win solution, since they depend on Indonesian palm oil. Indonesia has proposed a memorandum of understanding with the EU, and the IEU-CEPA trade deal — planned for 2027 — would grant zero-tariff access for 1 million tonnes of palm oil to the EU. GAPKI secretary general Hadi Sugeng warned that 2027 exports may fall to only 26.5 million tonnes (output of 56.6Mt under El Niño vs ~60Mt potential, with full-year B50 absorbing ~17.4Mt and domestic use at ~30Mt), risking Indonesia's trade balance.

Cuba denies any role in seized biodiesel shipments, energy minister tells Reuters

Cuban Energy and Mines Minister Vicente de la O Levy told Reuters in an exclusive interview in Havana (Oct 12) that there was "no contract of any kind with ENETEC S.A." and that no Cuban state-owned company had managed to secure any fuel contracts, rejecting US claims of government involvement in Cuba-bound biodiesel shipments seized in September. The US said last week it had seized 90 separate shipments of biodiesel worth nearly $3 million under contracts involving ENETEC, a sanctioned Cuban state energy trader, as part of a crackdown on fuel deliveries to the island. De la O Levy said US fuel exports are permitted only to Cuba's private sector, not the government, and imports cover less than 3% of the country's fuel needs. Cuba and the United Nations have called the US oil blockade illegal and contrary to international law.
